Al-Sharaa and al-Hoss discuss peace talks on the Syrian, Lebanese tracks
Lebanon-Syria-France, Politics, 1/27/2000

A telephone call was made on Wednesday between Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa and Lebanese Premier and Foreign Minister Salim al-Hoss dealing with Middle East peace process developments, especially on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks, and the latest developments in this regard.

In this respect, al-Sharaa and al-Hoss expressed their regret over the Israeli government which did not comprehend until now following two rounds of Syrian- Israeli peace talks in Washington and Shepherdstown that an agreement on border demarcation to the June 4, 1967 border lines is the natural entrance to revitalizing the works of other committees and a guarantee of their success.

Viewpoints between al-Sharaa and al-Hoss were identical that nothing is new on the Lebanese track. They stressed that achieving genuine progress on the Syrian track will help Lebanon in its peaceful march and is an indication of the possibility of establishing a just and comprehensive peace according to UN resolutions and the land-for-peace formula.

The Lebanese premier also discussed Middle East peace process developments with the French ambassador to Lebanon, Daniel Jouanneau.

During the meeting, al-Hoss welcomed the statement made by the deputy spokesman for French foreign minister, Francois Revaso, on the strong commitment of the French government towards the unity of the Lebanese territories and honoring the internationally recognized borders.

Al-Hoss asked Jouanneau to convey the thanks of the Lebanese government to French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin over this stand, which is but a confirmation of France's backing to Lebanon and to international legitimacy resolutions and its stand against the Israeli attempts made to violate these resolutions.
