Explosion in Irbil destroys headquarters of an Islamic movement
Iraq, Politics, 1/27/2000
An explosion took place in Irbil on Tuesday morning at the headquarters of the "Islamic Unity Movement," led by Sheikh Ali Abdul Aziz. The explosion resulted in huge material losses, but no human casualties were reported.
The spokesman for the movement held the "Iraqi regime responsible for the explosion" which destroyed the headquarters of the branch of the political bureau of the movement in Irbil and announced setting up a committee to investigate in the explosion which resulted from a time-bomb.
On Monday, Sheikh Abdul Aziz met at the headquarters of the movement in Irbil with the leader of the Kurdistani Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani, and discussed in a closed-door meeting matters relating to the Iraqi opposition in general and Kurdish matters in particular.
The spokesman for the movement described the meeting as was positive.
Barzani's visit to Sheikh Abdul Aziz in Irbil came two days after a similar visit made by the leader of the "Unity Movement" to Barzani at his headquarters in Salaheddine.
The relations between the movement and the KDP faced "certain problems" during the holy month of Ramadan because of certain sermons in the mosques.
The movement is not represented in the Kurdish government which is led by Barzani's party in the areas under his control in northern Iraq.
