Lebanese president sets new precedence and example to citizens
Lebanon, Politics, 1/27/2000

In a remarkable step and in an introduction to enforcing the "illegal wealth law," Lebanese President Emile Lahoud visited the headquarters of the constitutional council in al-Hadath and presented to the judge a declaration and a statement about his capitals and properties (transferred and non transferred).

In doing so the Lebanese president has opened the door wide before implementing the law on " illegal wealth" approved by the parliament in 1999 and published in the official newspaper at the end of 1999.

Observers see in the step taken by the Lebanese president a desire from his side and an assertion to implement this law, which obliges all candidates for political posts, the parliament and the legal and constitutional institutions to present a written statement clarifying their properties to the constitutional council before nominating themselves for any post.

This step by President Lahoud was greatly welcomed in Lebanese political circles, and many found in it an important step toward fighting corruption and clinging to law and order.
