Morocco calls for developing countries' cohesion to defend interests at trade talks
Morocco-International, Economics, 1/26/2000
Morocco called on developing countries to enhance cohesion and coordination to defend their interests at the multilateral trade talks of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) next month in Thailand.
Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Mohamed Benaissa, in his capacity as chairman of the 9th ministerial conference of the G-77, sent a message to his peers in 135 member countries.
Benaissa called developing countries to maintain and consolidate their cohesion and endeavor for the success of the 10th UNCTAD conference, the first conference in the 21st century to examine international economic issues and development.
Morocco argues that following the failure of the Seattle ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization, the Bangkok event offers an opportunity to deepen debates on the evolution of the multilateral trade system and build bases for the future of the world economy.
The message insists that developing countries have a key part in bringing out consensus on the whole set of international economic issues.
Morocco hosted last September the G-77 ministerial conference that sought to ensure close coordination among member countries.
