Arab League, Italy back efforts for reconciliation in Somalia
Regional-Italy, Politics, 1/26/2000

The Arab League and Italy have agreed on several steps in backing the reconciliation efforts, peace and stability in Somalia.

This was expressed in the talks held by the Arab League's assistant secretary general for Arab affairs, Ahmad Bin Hali, with the Secretary general of the Italian Foreign Ministry, Mr. Meilani in Cairo on Tuesday.

In press statements, Bin Hali said these steps aim at implementing the initiative of the president of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, concerning the Somali reconciliation, including the establishment of an international regional committee with the task of receiving the financial and material aid allotted to back the reconciliation efforts.

Bin Hali added that next to these measures is to work to find a formula that can be conducive to opening Mogadishu's port and airport and to benefit the income of the two ports and the airport for the interests of all Somalis, not only the interests of a certain group.
