French professor: Peace between Israel and the Arabs will be a truce
Regional-France, Politics, 1/25/2000
The director of the strategies philosophy center at the French Sorbonne University Jean Paul Sharni said that peace between the Arabs and Israel will result in a truce that might be long or short and that the Arabs will never give up the hope of returning back to Palestine, one day.
In a statement to the London based al-Wasat magazine, the French professor said that Israel, Syria and Lebanon had no other alternative strategies but to negotiate over matters which in light of current conditions permits the conclusion of agreements that break the cycle of wars that used to erupt approximately every decade.
He stated that these expected agreements will break this war cycle and will lead to a peace which "I call" a truce because the deep reasons for the conflict concerning the Arabs will stay.
The French professor added that the "Arab officials will keep in their minds" the idea which says "Palestine is Arab" and will also keep hoping Palestine will come back one day to the Arabs, adding that while Arab peoples say Palestine is Arab openly, the situation for Israel in the Middle East will not be easy in the long run.
Professor Sharni indicated the absence of the European role from peace negotiations in the region. He said, "It is regrettable to have Europe absent from this region."
He added that the Europeans shoulder the responsibility of their absence as long as there is no progress in the European defense policy or cooperation in foreign policy, saying such an absence will be frequent and the US will be the main player in international conflicts.
He added, "When I express my regret, I also say it might be the hard luck of the Arabs that Europe will be absent from vital issues pertaining to the Middle East."
