European Parliament pays tribute to Egypt's handling of Al- Kusheh events
Egypt-European Union, Politics, 1/25/2000
The European Parliament renounced the draft resolution which has no solid facts, submitted by a group of popular parties.
"The European decision came in response to the People's Assembly Speaker, Dr. Fathi Sorour's message in which he detailed the solid facts on the events of Al-Kusheh, in addition to the Egyptian Embassy's contacts to expound the events," the Egyptian Ambassador to Brussels Raouf Saad said.
The European Parliament praised Egypt's efforts to confront terrorism and extremism. The Parliament lauded how Egypt handled Al-Kusheh events.
Sorour's message assured that the Egyptian constitution guarantees the freedom of creed and equality of citizens without any religion-based discrimination.
"The government is exerting its utmost efforts to counter terrorism and extremism and what happened in Al-Kusheh is no more than a quarrel between two merchants, exacerbated because of the 'thaar' (retaliation) tradition in the village, the Prosecutor General moved to the scenes of the events, the prosecution probed into the matter and the government had decided to compensate victims," Sorour's message indicated.
Sorour asked in his message that those facts be reviewed by the European Parliament.
