Necessity to remove obstacles hampering peace tracks
Egypt-Jordan, Politics, 1/25/2000

President Hosni Mubarak's visit to Jordan Sunday afternoon and his meeting with King Abdullah II represents a link in continued consultations between the two leaders.

The Egyptian leader and the Jordanian monarch discussed during a tete-a-tete meeting bilateral relations and means of boosting them in various domains. They also tackled conditions in the region especially the developments of the peace process in addition to issues of mutual concern.

The Middle East peace process figured high on the agenda of talks between the two leaders and Egyptian-Jordanian efforts were continuing in support of Arab negotiators on the Syrian and Palestinian tracks, especially in light of the necessity to remove the obstacles hampering the two tracks.

The current Arab situation and grounds for joint Arab action in the coming period were also reviewed during the meeting.

Mubarak and Abdullah stressed the need for exploiting the present opportunity for promoting the peacemaking and reaching a just and comprehensive peaceful settlement on all tracks so that peace, stability and prosperity may prevail the whole Region.

The two Arab leaders also asserted support for Syrian and Palestinian brethren in their negotiations with Israel based on international legitimacy resolutions, and the Madrid terms of reference.

The two sides pointed out that the Palestinian cause was the crux of the struggle in the Region, stressing the impossibility of having permanent peace in the area without a just and comprehensive settlement of this issue.

Such a settlement should ensure the Palestinian people's legitimate rights including the right to set up an independent state on the Palestinian national soil.
