Continuing detaining Egyptian students accused of belonging to Islamic groups
Egypt, Local, 1/24/2000

A lawyer defending the Islamic groups in Egypt said that the prosecution authorities in the state's security prosecution in Egypt ordered yesterday the extension of the detention of 19 university students accused of belonging to the prohibited Muslim Brothers group, one day after releasing one of the group's leaders.

The lawyer, Abd El-Monem Abd El-Maksoud, said in press statements that the interrogations ended at 2 a.m. yesterday and that the suspects will remain detained for 15 days, saying that the students were on a trip to Alexandria city when they were arrested by the state's security.

The lawyer added, "I expect setting them free, as the authorities take into consideration that they are students."

Security sources said yesterday that, "The investigation showed that those students held a meeting at the university, and made a work plan and tried to receive other students."
