Jordanian- Egyptian summit voices backing for Middle East peace process
Jordan-Egypt, Politics, 1/24/2000

King Abdullah II of Jordan and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak held a closed- door meeting on Sunday in Amman at Raghdan's palace, followed by a plenary meeting attended by Crown Prince Hamzeh Bin Hussein, Prince Faisal Bin Hussein, and senior officials representing the two sides.

The two sides discussed bilateral relations and prospects for developing and strengthening them in various fields, as well as developments of conditions in the region, especially those pertaining to the peace process and issues of mutual concern.

King Abdullah and President Mubarak stressed the importance of exploiting chances currently available to strengthen peace opportunities so as to achieve a just and comprehensive peace on all tracks and ensure stability and prosperity for the region's countries and peoples.

The two sides also stressed backing for the Syrians and the Palestinians on their negotiating tracks with Israel, according to international legitimacy resolutions and the principles on the grounds of which the Madrid peace conference was initiated.

The two sides asserted that the cause of Palestine is the core of the conflict in the region and that peace is not attainable without maintaining a just and comprehensive solution that provides for establishing an independent Palestinian state on their own native soil of Palestine.

The two leaders also underlined the importance of restoring Arab solidarity and unifying Arab ranks so as to withstand current challenges, foremost being economic challenges.

President Mubarak and members of the accompanying delegation arrived in Amman from Damascus earlier in the day.

In a statement, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa stressed that there are consultations among Arab leaders to convene an Arab summit because it is important, adding that there is a great "hope to convene such a summit."

In a statement he made in Amman on Sunday, Moussa denied any agreement between Jordan, Egypt and Syria to convene a tripartite summit, adding that convening any Arab summit should be made in coordination and consultation with Arab leaders on ways of convening it and the topics it debates.

Moussa continued that the visit of President Mubarak to Jordan falls in the course of inter-Arab consultations regarding all issues "of concern to us as Arabs."
