Egypt's role on the Syrian- Israeli negotiations
Egypt-Syria, Politics, 1/24/2000
The London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat daily quoted an Egyptian source as saying that the Egyptian channel has become required more than at any time before to help Syria and Israel eliminate obstacles that emerged during the two past rounds of negotiations in the US town of Shepherdstown.
The source told the paper in statements published in its Sunday issue that Cairo does not seek to play a role, but to revive the Middle East peace process and keep the moral impetus that emerged following the resumption of the peace talks. The Egyptian official admitted to certain differences between Cairo and Damascus toward matters connecting to the peace process and the practices of the Israeli prime minister.
The paper expected, according to an official Egyptian source, that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak would have proposed to Syrian President Hafez al-Assad the idea of convening a summit for the Arab states bordering Israel to avoid any Arab disputes that Israel may benefit from.
For its part, the London-based al-Hayat daily said on Sunday that the Syrian-Egyptian summit between President al-Assad and President Mubarak has proved the elimination of "coolness" in the relations between the two states, as it is the first summit in one year.
