Sudan, Eritrea open their joint borders
Sudan-Eritrea, Politics, 1/24/2000
Sudan has announced that since Friday borders were opened with Eritrea on the eve of resuming diplomatic relations between Khartoum and Asmara.
The Sudanese news agency quoted the Sudanese minister of transport and communications, al-Hadi Bushra, as saying during a celebration held in Kasla, close to the borders with Eritrea, that it has become possible to resume the traffic on the road between the two countries, safely.
He added that security on the borders is ensured according to normalization agreements signed between Sudan and Eritrea.
During a sudden meeting held by the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to Eritrea on January 18, it was decided to construct a highway at a length of 60 km between Kasla and Tasanai, western Eritrea.
On January 20 Eritrea had opened its embassy in Khartoum, thereby to mark the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which were severed in 1995.
On January 14 Khartoum and Asmara announced their decision to resume relations between the two countries and signed on the same occasion a bilateral agreement on air transport that allows the Sudanese and Eritrean airline companies to resume ordinary flights between the two countries.
