Egyptian Diplomatic Missions to bypass Kosheh incidents
Egypt, Politics, 1/22/2000

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has supplied its embassies abroad with all information on the recent incidents in the upper Egyptian village of Kosheh.

Egyptian Embassies and Diplomatic Missions in the European Capitals, the US, Canada and Australia were also notified of measures taken by the Egyptian government to stave off a repetition of the incidents.

Hani Khallaf, Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs, said the Foreign Ministry has set up a number of committees to follow up, monitor and analyze all reports coming home from Egyptian diplomatic missions abroad, along with scrutinizing related foreign media reports.

Khallaf further said the recent visits to Egypt, at Cairo's invitation, by a number of US Congress members have greatly helped in putting the incident in its proper proportion before world public opinion.

Egypt's Ambassadors abroad have been supplied with basic information about some controversial issues, including emergency laws in Egypt, the status of Copts in the country, the constitutions stand on religion and aspects of national fraternity in the political, social and economic life in Egypt, Khallaf said.

The move, he went on to explain, is meant to enable Egyptian Ambassadors abroad to convincingly address foreign public opinion.

Speaking of adverse attempts, during the past two days, to get the European Parliament to issue a resolution on Kosheh, Khallaf pointed out to the urgent political moves Egypt has embarked on to explain the facts and to ensure that any parliamentary move should be in keeping with all considerations and mutual interests.

The foreign ministry, in coordination with the ministries of justice and the interior, is reviewing and updating all reports in foreign circles to make sure they tally with reality, he added.
