Morocco, Politics, 1/22/2000

Morocco's travel agency federation (FNAVM) held in Casablanca its 21st national congress on the topic: "Travel professionals and the promotion of lasting tourism in Morocco."

Tourism Minister Hassan Sebbar said the event took place at a time when the sector was definitely picking up and could be used as one of the economic development locomotives. A two-digit growth was recorded last year with 19% more arrivals and 10% more nightly stays. Revenues reached $1.85 billion (18.5 billion dhs), a 12% increase.

Participants examined different issues related to their activity and ways to enhance the industry in the total respect of the environment. Indeed, all insisted on the necessity to reconcile economic, cultural, social, scientific and environmental interests if the promotion of lasting tourism is to be achieved.
