Tensions Tear Apart Polisario Leadership, Paper
Morocco, Politics, 1/20/2000
Deep tensions are currently tearing apart the polisario leadership which failed to impose its diktat on the Sahrawis sequestered in the Tindouf camps in south western Algeria, reported Moroccan Assahara Al Maghribia daily.
The daily said tensions are also caused by the refusal of members of the polisario offices abroad to attend in Tindouf a meeting of the so-called foreign relations commission, fearing for their life.
Several polisario representatives, including those in Canada, Mexico, Portugal, Italy, the Canary islands, Angola and Congo, have handed in their resignation, the daily said.
It added that the polisario so-called parliament (national council) convened for more than twenty days but failed to reach any agreement or decision, a fact that worsened the anger and disappointment within the polisario and deepened tensions in its ranks, that were already undermined by internal upheavals, and inability to meet the sequestered populations' food and medicare needs.
For the daily, the polisario is left with no other alternative but proclaim its own dissolution and facilitate the return of the sahrawis to their motherland, Morocco.
The polisario, an algeria-backed guerilla movement, is claiming sovereignty over the Moroccan southern provinces that were formerly under Spanish rule and that were retrieved by the kingdom in 1975 under the Madrid accords.
