Lebanon refuses to grant right of asylum to Iraqi opposition member
Lebanon-Iraq, Politics, 1/20/2000

Lebanon refused a request presented by Iraqi opposition member Ahmed El Douri for the right of asylum.

Lebanese Interior Minister Michel Murr justified this refusal out of an important principle by saying that Lebanon will not be a refuge to any person opposing any Arab system.

The right of asylum committee took the refusal decision in its first meeting under the chairmanship of the interior minister.

The committee also discussed in its meeting the right of asylum request presented by the five Japanese members of the Red Army, whose three-year prison term is about to end, as they were accused of using forged Lebanese stamps and getting into Lebanon illegally.
