Israeli paper and the Syrian track
Syria-Israel, Politics, 1/20/2000

The Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot said on Wednesday that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak prefers to negotiate with Syria on the grounds of June 6, 1967 of no certain or definite border marks, which will give the two sides a margin to maneuvere, instead of negotiating on the basis of international borders set in 1923 by the two mandates of the French and British powers at that time to separate Palestine and Syria.

The paper added that despite this Barak prefers in this phase of negotiations not to openly declare his consent to June 4, 1967 line with slight amendments.

The Israeli paper added that Syrian negotiators said that defining the June 4 line should be made on the basis of the range of light weapons fire from advanced Syrian positions in the Golan during that period, which means to an area ranged between one to one and a half kilometers to the west of the Heights' slopes.

Such a demarcation leaves for the Syrian side a great part of the Jordan river and the northeast of Tabaraya Lake, the most important water resource in Israel.
