AL chief confers with EU delegation
Regional-European Union, Politics, 1/19/2000
Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid on Tuesday in Cairo received the European Union delegation led by Portuguese Foreign Minister Jaime Gama, whose country currently presides over the EU.
Following the meeting, the Portuguese FM said he and Abdul Meguid exchanged viewpoints on the Middle East peace process and talked about methods of consolidating the EU- AL relations.
He expressed hope that the parties concerned in the peace process will be able to overcome the obstacles hindering any progress towards peace. He also stressed that the EU's role in the process is not as a negotiator but as a supporter of the negotiation process, adding that the EU's regional role is to cooperate with the concerned parties through enhancing bilateral relations and consolidating the European- Mediterranean partnership agreement.
For his part, the AL chief said he briefed the visiting delegation on the latest developments, particularly in the peace process, and talked to them about the importance of continuous support by the EU for this process and the necessity of urging Israel to implement the signed Palestinian- Israeli peace agreements and to commit itself to international legitimacy resolutions and the land-for-peace principle.
The AL chief continued that the talks also dealt with the Iraqi and Libyan crises and called on the EU to exert more efforts in order to lift sanctions from the Iraqi and Libyan peoples.
The EU delegation includes the secretary general of the EU council, Javier Solana, and the EU Middle East envoy, Miguel Moratinos.
