Syrian PNF holds Israel responsible for the current situation of negotiations
Syria, Politics, 1/19/2000

The Syrian Progressive National Front on Tuesday chaired by Vice President Zuheir Masharqa held a meeting.

The participants in the meeting listened to a political report read by Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa. The report dealt with the latest developments of negotiations between Syria and Israel.

They discussed the difficulties facing these talks after Syria agreed to resume talks from the point where they left off. They also discussed the results of these talks, especially the achievement of the land-for-peace formula and the Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan to the June 4, 1967 border lines.

The central leadership of the PNF also viewed the Israeli policy in negotiations which were based on non-commitment to the principles according to which peace talks were resumed, as a policy which may not lead to a just and comprehensive peace.

It indicated that the Israeli attempts to ignore peace requirements, especially complete withdrawal from the Golan, raise suspicion about the extent of its seriousness to making these talks a success.

The PNF's central leadership said the Israeli government is held responsible for the current situation the peace talks have reached.

It continued that this situation won't be changed unless Israel is ready to recognize the cohesion of peace principles, mainly the withdrawal from the occupied Golan.

It confirmed the importance of US role in these talks. It also viewed that reactivating this role as sponsor of the peace process contributes to the realization of the hoped-for goals of these talks.

It asserted Syria's clinging to peace as a strategic choice to liberate the land and ensure security and stability.

The PNF commended Syria's policy in the peace talks and remarked that this policy is based pan national and pan-Arab principles.
