Israel to make amendment to end current crisis with Syria
Syria-Israel, Politics, 1/19/2000
Israeli Minister of the Interior Yossi Beilin said in a statement to Israeli Radio on Tuesday that Syria does not understand the motives for the Syrian decision to suspend the negotiations. He expressed his belief that there is a mistake.
Beilin added, "The dialogue should continue between the Syrian and Israeli sides," expressing his conviction that rifts in the two sides' stances have been eliminated in the two past rounds of negotiations and that, "We do even own enough time."
In a statement to the Israeli Radio on Tuesday, a well-informed Israeli source said that that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak might have conveyed to US President Bill Clinton Israel's readiness to evacuate the whole of the Golan, but Barak has not so far announced that because of his failed hopes for the Syrian stand toward the questions of normalization and security arrangements.
The same source expected the current crisis to end very soon after the advisors for Barak, Danny Yatoum and Uri Saguey, convey certain amendments in the Israeli position towards starting border demarcation because Barak has the belief that small crises may become great and serious if they accumulate; therefore, "detente should come very soon."
