Syria's position towards the peace talks with Israel
Syria-Israel, Politics, 1/19/2000
The Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas quoted a high-ranking Syrian official as saying on Tuesday that the Syrian leadership made a precise analytical study of the results and details of the Syrian- Israeli talks and reached the conclusion that there is a kind of scenario set accurately to embarrass Syria and show it in the shape of the side which undermines peace in the region as well as to distort the Syrian position before international public opinion.
The Syrian official said that the scenario tries to impose a peace treaty similar to those previously rejected by Damascus and considered it insulting to the supreme national interests of the Arab states.
The Syrian official stressed Syria's total rejection of this logic, adding that Syria is ready to repel any challenge, regardless of its forms, and that if the Israelis intend to establish grounds of peace, they have to abide by their taken commitments which have become known to all.
He stated that Syria will never allow the western side of the Hermon mountain to be in the hands of the Israelis and will not accept the restoration of several kilometers due to geography and on the other side to lose history, adding that Syria recommends for the Israelis and those who may be concerned not to waste time because "our stances" will be unwavering, and that what had been made of proposals from the Syrian side on the US paper embodies Syria's complete position.
The Syrian official indicated that several Arab states have been mislead on the grounds that a settlement is eventual between Syria and Israel and that there is no problem in taking early steps in order to formulate certain relations between these Arab states and Israel.
He added that, "Syria asks the Arab states not to take into account the misleading Israeli policy which is negatively reflected on the Arab future."
The Syrian official also stressed the participation of the Syrian public opinion in taking the decision and that what is said is not correct about that this decision to make peace with Israel is taken solely by the Syrian leadership.
