Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said in a special statement to ArabicNews.com that "Egypt always links between progress in the bilateral negotiation tracks in the peace process and its participation in the multilateral negotiations," expressing peace talks progress will coincide with the the multilateral negotiations. Concerning whether Syria might be furious because of Egypt's participation in the multilateral negotiations which Syria boycotted, Moussa said, "Egypt suspended its participation in the multilateral negotiations on a condition of the resumption of bilateral negotiations between Syria and Israel and the necessity of having a progress in it, which has already taken place." Iraq strongly opposed the recommendation made by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to appoint Rolf Ekeus as chairman of a new inspection organization for Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.
