Report: Barak and the negotiations with Syria
Syria-Israel, Politics, 1/18/2000

Monte Carlo radio's correspondent in Tel Aviv quoted a well-informed Israeli source as saying that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak will propose in the coming round to the Syrians a clearer stand toward the question of the borders but a stand less than the Syrian expectations in this regard.

The report added that he will ask to reduce the number of Syrian troops that will be deployed within a distance of 10 km from the border against a symbolic reduction of the Israeli military presence in the Galilee, amid estimates that the coming round of dialogue will either be conducive to a serious breakthrough or total collapse.

Monte Carlo radio said that Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdul Illah al-Khatib, currently visiting Israel, has discussed with his Israeli counterpart, David Levy, the latest developments concerning negotiations on the Syrian- Israeli track.
