EU to help rebuild the Golan

Israeli Hebrew language radio on Monday said that the countries of the European Union wish to take part in the Syrian-Israeli negotiations, especially concerning the agreement over the water issue, economic development for the Golan area and security measures that can build confidence between the two sides.

The radio report said, quoting well-informed political sources, that the EU member states have recently held talks with US officials in order to set up a four-member committee in which Syria, Israel, the EU member states and the US will take part, and the committee will be in charge giving a push forward to the Syrian-Israeli negotiations towards reaching an agreement on the aforesaid topics.

The correspondent continued that the EU member states want to participate directly in developing the Golan economically. It said they wish to take part in rebuilding Quneitra (the Syrian city which was destroyed by Israelis before their withdrawal from it after 1973 war in line with disengagement agreement with Syria) and in establishing industrial projects in the Golan.

The radio added the secretary of the EU ministerial council, Javier Solana, and the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, the current President of the EU will arrive in Israel and meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister David Levy to hold talks with them on the European intention to directly take part in the process and development of the negotiations.
