Aswan celebrates splendid high dam 30th anniversary, 3rd Toshka birthday

Work in the third phase of Sheikh Zayed Canal is to start next week, Financed by Abou Dhabi government at a cost of $ 100 million. Also an agreement has been reached with a major Dutch Company to undertake digging and infrastructure work.

In celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the construction of the High Dam and the third anniversary of Southern Valley project that both coincide with Aswan's National Day, Dr. Mahmoud Abou Zeid, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister said that there is great willingness on all investors' part to contribute to Toshka project, among them are a group of Greek investors asking for 200,000 feddans to be used in industrial and land-reclaiming projects.

Concrete pillars of the colossal Mubarak pumping station are being constructed, with a view to protecting the station from severe earthquakes.

"High-tech equipment is being used in smoothing the land surface of the pumping station site," added Dr. Abou Zeid.

During Aswan's National Day celebrations starting Saturday morning, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation handed medals of merit to senior officials, including an award of Merit honoring the name of late ex-prime Minister and High Dam Minister Muhammad Sedki, Engineer Maher- Abaza, ex Power Minister.

"Aswan governorate is dedicating all its effort to promoting the two huge projects, the High Dam and Toshka project by all possible means," said Dr. Kamal Amer, Governor of Aswan.
