Mediations for the return of Hamas leaders to Jordan
Jordan, Politics, 1/17/2000
The chairman of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement, Khaled Mashaal, has expected that within one week the results of current mediation for the return to Jordan of four Hamas leaders who were expelled in November, 1999 to Qatar will become clear.
In a statement to the London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat, Mashaal added that the four deportees will resort to the Jordanian court if the mediations fail.
Mashaal continued, "We have prepared to nominate lawyers awaiting for results of political efforts. If such political efforts do not result in what might please us, we will start measures to raise a case against the deportation decisions to the Jordanian supreme court of justice." He expressed his hope that the political efforts will meet with success.
On August 30, 1999 the Jordanian government closed the offices of the movement, arrested several of its members and expelled, besides Mashaal, movement spokesman Ibrahim Ghoshe, and two members of Hamas' political bureau, Izzat al-Rishq and Samy Khater.
