Moroccan premier announces draft laws on Women Integration Plan
Morocco, Politics, 1/14/2000
Moroccan Premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi said Thursday that draft laws will be submitted to the parliament for the implementation of the Women Integration Plan and said dialogue will be held on controversial issues of the plan.
The prime minister, in a 90-minute presentation before the house of representatives, said most of the proposals contained in the plan will be implemented while other aspects related to the personal statute will be discussed as part of a "serene and constructive" dialogue between experts and all concerned sides.
He went on that the goal is to reach national consensus that corresponds to Morocco's spiritual values and Islamic law (charia) and at the same time the need to modernize the society.
As a last resort, the issue will be submitted to the king's appreciation, he added.
Youssoufi also recalled the creation of a standing ministerial commission to promote education and literacy programs for women, improve reproductive health services, reducing poverty among women and promoting their empowerment.
