Government earmarks funds to compensate disappearance victims
Morocco, Politics, 1/14/2000
The government has decided to earmark funds to start paying compensation to the victims of forced disappearance or their families, Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi announced on Thursday.
The government has decided to earmark funds, as of this week and in accordance with the estimates of the Human Rights Advisory Council (CCDH), to make down payments to people deserving compensation for forced disappearance, pending the final list, Youssoufi said in a 90-minute speech before the House of Representatives, lower house of Parliament.
The list will be set by the arbitration commission, set up by King Mohammed VI, to examine the compensation issue.
Youssoufi, who recalled that Morocco scored a positive evolution in human rights issues under the leadership of the late King Hassan II, underlined that huge strides are being made in this regard thanks to the initiative of King Mohammed VI to set up the arbitration commission.
The prime minister noted that the institution of a democratic society is a requisite for any economic development. There can be no economic development without a democratic society, he said.
