Kuwait-Iran, Politics, 1/14/2000

The Kuwaiti dailies reported on Wednesday that the Kuwaiti coastal policemen arrested 42 Iranians who tried to sneak into Kuwait via the sea and another eight who entered the country illegally.

The Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am said that a coastal area police force besieged two boats which were carrying 28 Iranians and rescued another 14 Iranians who were on the deck of a third boat which went down near Bobian island off the northern coast of Kuwait.

An Iranian community of 66,000 works in Kuwait. Most of them work in handicrafts, for low salaries.

On Tuesday, the Kuwaiti minister of the interior said the governments of Kuwait and Iran are preparing to sign an agreement very shortly aimed at protecting the two countries' sea openings, putting an end to sneaking operations and eliminating drug-smuggling operations.
