Cabinet discuss Al-Kusheh incidents

In its meeting headed by Prime Minister Atef Ebeid today, the ministerial committee reviewed the violent clashes that took place in the Upper Egypt, village of Al-Kusheh Sohag governorate on the eve of the new year.
The Committee added through reports submitted by the ministers of interior, justice, information, foreign affairs in addition to those prepared by the parliament, and Sohag governorate, said Minister of Information Safwat El-Sherif.
The reports showed that life returned to normal in the beleaguered village and that the main element in the ongoing stability is the awareness of the people and their rejection of all elements of instigation.
The reports also highlighted the high security alert and the neutral stance the police have been observing since the very outset of violence.
The reports, Sherif noted, said the Prosecutor General moved to Sohag to monitor the investigations of the incidents in which the following steps have been taken:
1- The Prosecution ordered the arrest of 59 suspects of whom 24 have been already interrogated.
2- Some 58 witnesses including casualties in hospitals have been heard.
3- The number of those in custody pending trial is 21.
4- All damage was recorded in Dar as-Salam, the neighboring village which was also scorched and had many of its shops and property destroyed during the riots.
5- The coroners and autopsy experts will conclude their task within days.
Prime Minister Atef Ebeid emphasized that the perpetrators will be severely punished and those who have been harmed will be duly compensated.
