Egypt to host regional conference on eradicating illiteracy

Cairo is to host on January 24 a regional Arab conference under the title "Education for all." It is organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the UNDPI, the UNICEF and the World Bank.
The UN press controller in Cairo, Mrs. Majida Khourshid, said that several delegations will take part in this event, especially ALECSO (the Arab League, Education, Cultural and Scientific Organization), the Arab education office in the Gulf states. Also taking part are delegations representing the Arab Gulf program to back UN development organizations, the Islamic Development Bank, ESCWA, the ILO, WHO and UNRWA.
She added that the conference will be held in the outskirts of Naser city and will last four days, noting that the conference aims basically for attaining education for all in the Arab region and eradicate some 65 million illiterates.
Khourshid said that according to estimates of UNESCO, the Arab states need almost US $1.5 billion every year as additional investments in the area of education, according to the world document for human rights which stressed the right of each person to receive education for free, at least in its basic and first stage, and for elementary schooling to be compulsory.
There are approximately some 9 million Arab children who do not practice their role in education, however the Arab states which have signed the international declaration for human rights recognize children's rights to education and in having education available to all.
