Some 40,000 Palestinians with IDs in their homeland
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 1/13/2000

Well-informed Palestinian sources said that more than 40,000 Palestinians who came back home from abroad according to visit licenses which expired, are living now in the Palestinian government areas and cannot move among the Palestinian cities or travel abroad due to the fact that any of them who pass through Israeli barriers will be immediately detained and then expelled outside the borders.

The sources added that the question of such Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip has been intensified in the Palestinian government circles and is behind many humanitarian crises, especially during occasions like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha when they only share such events with their relatives and families via the telephone.

However, the Israeli government had imposed large financial fines on violators to the extent that one who violates them has to pay a penalty of thousands of US dollars, with the aim of pushing them to leave their country.

Nevertheless, the Palestinian government believes, according to the sources, that its success in ensuring the return of those Palestinians is a great achievement despite the difficulties and the civil rights abridgment of the Palestinians until their conditions are settled.
