Morocco deplores Spanish premier words on Sebta and Melillia
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 1/12/2000
The Moroccan government voiced amazement and deplored words by head of the Spanish government Jose Maria Aznar and the Popular Party during his visit last Sunday to occupied presidios of Sebta and Melillia.
The government spokesman Khalid Alioua said Aznar's statements were inappropriate in many ways and meant to thrust an anachronism of the past into the future.
Media reported early this week on the visit and quoted Aznar as saying that Sebta was an "integral part of a scheme for the future of Spain" and referring to the "Spanish nature" of Melillia.
Alioua told "MAP" Morocco recalls legitimate stand on the two Moroccan enclaves and neighboring islands still under Spanish rule and repeated call to settle the issue through dialogue and consultation. Moroccan inalienable rights and Spanish economic interests should be guaranteed by a final settlement marshaled by a joint reflection group as proposed in 1987 by the late King Hassan II, the spokesman said.
