Lebanese moves to prevent the execution of two Lebanese in Kinshasa
Lebanon-Congo, Politics, 1/12/2000
The chairman of the Lebanese Parliament's foreign affairs committee, Ali al-Khalil, on Tuesday in Beirut reviewed with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss the question of the death sentence released in Kinshasa against Lebanese citizens Samy Yassin and Khalil Ghadban under the charges of smuggling money to Congo revolutionaries.
Al-Khali considered the sentence taken by Kinshasa as "a violation of human rights legitimacy and international norms and charters."
He called on the Lebanese government to send a delegate to Zaire in order to make contacts with specialized authorities in order to give up this sentence, as well as to make contacts with the new president of the Ivory Coast, "where the Lebanese suffered heavy material losses because their trade centers were stolen."
