Sudanese opposition holds four security men
Sudan, Politics, 1/12/2000

The Sudanese daily al-Anbaa quoted the governor of the Blue Nile (al-Neel al-Azraq) province in the southeastern part of Sudan as saying that the Sudanese opposition has seized four men from the Sudanese security sources as hostages during an armed attack.

The governor of the Blue Nile, Abdul Rahman Abu Medyan, said, "An armed gang from the opposition in the outside of the country" attacked on Sunday night a car manned by five members of the security forces, confiscated the car and seized the men inside it while the fifth succeeded in fleeing and notifying the authorities about this incident.

He stressed that the attackers sneaked into "the border area" from Ethiopia in order to carry out acts of violence and destruction. He stated that the attack took place when the government's security men arrived in their general headquarters in the city of Damazin in southeast Sudan after they handed over foodstuffs to their colleagues working in the area.

The governor of the Blue Nile district was referring in his statements to the forces of the Democratic National Alliance, which is an alliance of the northern opposition and the rebels of southern Sudan.
