King Mohammed amnesties 990 detainees on Independence Manifesto anniversary
Morocco, Politics, 1/11/2000

King Mohammed VI amnestied 990 detainees on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the Independence Manifesto.

Some 436 detainees were given free pardon on the remaining period of their detention, while 397 others had their life jail sentence commuted to limited one.

The Independence Manifesto was presented in 1944 by 66 Moroccan nationalist leaders to the French occupiers to claim Morocco's independence. The Manifesto marked a decisive turning point in the Moroccan people struggle for independence under the leadership of the late King Mohammed V (Grand Father of King Mohammed VI). The kingdom gained independence in 1956.

The king had pardoned 1,196 persons on the occasion of the Aid Al-Fitr, celebrated over the weekend in Morocco.

The king grants amnesty to inmates on the occasion of religious and national days.
