An openness in the Syrian media
Syria, Politics, 1/10/2000

The Syrian negotiating delegation at Shepherdstown has made an unprecedented openness in expressing its stances and views over the negotiations, and it seems that the Syrians, for the first time, are fighting the Israeli side with the same media weapon.

It was noted, however, that the media, represented by the director general of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Fawaz Sayegh, and the director of the Syrian TV, Safwan Ghanem, had taken initiatives in contacting the correspondents of Arab and foreign news agencies in charge of covering news of the negotiations and even contacting their offices in Damascus in order to cover news of the Syrian side and explain what is taking place from the Syrian viewpoint.

The first round of the negotiations was for the Israeli media promoted through an "army" of Israeli correspondents, who accompanied the Israeli delegation, through marketing Israeli news and rumors, even among Arab correspondents.

It also seemed that the Syrian side had realized the volume of the loss if it should continue its official silence and pursue its traditionally calm policy.

A source in the Syrian delegation said that Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa "is satisfied this time over the coverage made of the Syrian side."
