King Abdullah invites Khatami to Jordan
Jordan-Iran, Politics, 1/10/2000

Jordan's King Abdullah II has invited Iranian President Mohammad Khatami to visit Amman, a visit which, if materialized, will be the first ever by an Iranian head of state to Jordan in the past two decades, state-run Tehran radio reported on Monday.

King Abdullah extended the invitation in a telephone call to Khatami, the radio said, adding that Khatami responded that he would visit Jordan in "an appropriate occasion."

Khatami expressed hope that ties between Iran and Jordan would expand in all fields, and stressed that "Al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the Aqsa Mosque would soon be liberated so that the Muslims, Christians and Jews would be able to freely perform their duties and rites in that land."

Following the Islamic revolution of 1979, Iran's ties with Jordan became tense as Tehran and Amman started exchanging accusations.

Ties between Iran and Jordan have improved since the coming to power of Khatami in August 1997.
