Toshka celebrates its third birthday
Egypt, Politics, 1/10/2000
A New Delta West of the Nile Valley Project of the 20th Century. President Mubarak has given the signal for the launching in the Western Desert of the Upper Egypt Master Development Project.
On January 9, 1997, new life was pumped in veins of Egypt, when President Hosni Mubarak gave the go-ahead and paid his first visit to the mega national project of Toshka with a view to creating new Delta in the southwestern desert of Egypt.
The project of the new Delta, Toshka, includes digging new canal with the aim of transferring Nile waters to feed hundreds of thousands of feddans in the west of the Nile Valley, and consequently creating new communities to absorb some five million Egyptians.
The ultimate goal is to establish new civilization, hence the South Valley is part and parcel of an integrated investment map targeted to unleash Egypt's prospects at all walks of life.
The features of the new Delta came to light after the completing of digging the main canal stream along 45 Km and starting digging the first and second branches.
Work is going on in building the giant pumping station on 308 square meters with depth of 50 meters to lift 25 million cubic meters of water 200 meters above sea level.
Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mahmoud Abou Zeid affirmed that today, the Egyptian people are forming a new epic of construction representing a proper ushering into the 21st Century.
Undoubtedly, this project is to completely alter aspects of life in 41% of Egypt's area through changing the promising areas in this integral part of Egypt into population-attractive spots, adding new virgin arable plot to Egypt's green land starting with half a million feddans to reach more than two million feddans all located south of the valley.
The creation of a new delta west of the Nile Valley is part of the Upper Egypt Master Development Project which seeks to redistribute Egypt's population across the country and increase the inhabited area from 6 per cent at present to 25 per cent over the coming 20 years.
President Hosni Mubarak paid the gigantic project of Toshka several field tours to follow up, in person, digging works and to give great momentum to the steadfast Egyptians who seek the challenge of turning the yellow desert to green where there is a feeling that the future is better on Toshka third's birthday.
