Jewish fund claims properties of Syrian territories
Syria-Israel, Politics, 1/10/2000

The board of the Jewish National Fund, which is a state-run establishment, holds today a meeting to discuss the future of lands owned by the border near Damascus.

Israeli Radio said that the fund's board will discuss all documents which prove the ownership of these lands.

A member of the Israeli Knesset from Shinui movement, questioned the fate of these lands and asked for explanations about that and whether Israel had taken into consideration the fate of these lands during border demarcation in the Golan and also whether these lands will be used as a bargaining chip.

The first advisor for the Jewish National Fund, lawyer Abraham Halili, stated that these lands are situated in the villages of Sihm al-Golan, Jaleen, Kawkab al-Qibliyeh, and al-Shemaliyeh (towards the north) and Bastas, just 30 km southeast of Damascus.

Halili added that a company called "Beika" had bought these lands tens of years earlier in 1920 - 1930 and these lands are estimated at an area of 100,000 dunnums and that now only 53 dunnums are left after registrations, including arable and forest lands, adding that there are houses in these lands for workers in the farms.

He continued that there are documents which prove the ownership of these lands and receipts for taxes and ways of renting these lands to the workers, noting that all these things can be proven when it is necessary.
