Lebanese Army arrests six gunmen
Lebanon, Local, 1/7/2000

Lebanese troops rounded up at least six gunmen in northern Lebanon on Thursday night after clashes erupted between the gunmen and the army on the new year's celebration, Lebanese security sources reported on Thursday.

The Lebanese security sources added that the gunmen were captured on the outskirts of Kafer Bibbou village, the main site of the skirmishes between the gunmen and the Lebanese forces.

Moreover, the bodies of the four gunmen were also found under the rubble of a house that was flattened in the fighting, and so far these four killings raise the death toll to 20 gunmen.

Eleven soldiers were killed in the clashes, as were at least three civilians, including two women the gunmen had taken hostage. The army said it had killed 16 gunmen and imprisoned around 50 to break the back of the group.

Moreover, on Thursday, the Lebanese Army supported by tanks combed hills around the villages of Mermel Meher and Sib'eal northeast of the Seer-Dinnieh, the Lebanese sources continued.
