Report: Israel reduces compensation demands of the US
Israel-USA, Politics, 1/7/2000
The London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat daily said on Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak had agreed, at the request of US President Bill Clinton, to make amendments in the compensation Israel demands for withdrawal from the Golan and reduce it from US $20 billion to US $17 billion.
The paper added that President Clinton told Barak that there is an atmosphere in the US against financing the peace process and that much has to be done in order to convince people to change these feelings, and even if the US succeeds in convincing them, it will not be able to convince them to pay a huge sum.
The paper reported that the Israeli military delegation will continue the issue of a long list of weapons proposed by Gen. Amos Yaron, the director general of the Israeli Defense Ministry, to the US Defense Department in the framework of the security deal for withdrawal. The list includes advanced military equipment and weapons which are not even available to the NATO member states.
The Israeli military delegation will also ask for the freedom to have access to secret information with the CIA.
