Two Omani diplomats arrive in Israel
Oman-Israel, Politics, 1/7/2000

Two high-ranking diplomats from Oman arrived in Israel on Wednesday evening to reopen the office in charge of supervising Omani interests in Israel.

Israeli Radio said this office was closed more than three years ago following the political stalemate during that period, and since then Oman kept the rented offices in Tel Aviv but the offices were closed off.

Meanwhile, the Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot said, quoting high-ranking political sources in Israel, that the arrival of the two Omani diplomats is considered the first effort by the side of Oman to improve (heat up) relations with Israel.

Simultaneously, the sources asserted that it is premature to talk about raising the level of relations between Israel and Oman from an office for supervising interests to the level of an embassy.

Meanwhile, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Nawaf Masalha met on Thursday with the deputy advisor of the Omani foreign minister, Mushtaq Abdullah Saleh, who is currently visiting Israel.

Following the meeting, Masalha told Israeli Radio that his talks with the Omani official dealt with the Middle East peace process and the possibility of developing Omani-Israeli relations.

Masalha said he is optimistic over the possibility of achieving progress on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks and on reaching an accord before the end of this year.
