Grenada Islamic council satisfied with municipal changes
Regional-Spain, Religion, 1/6/2000
The Islamic Council in the Spanish south city of Grenada voiced Wednesday satisfaction on the changes carried out at the municipal level on Sunday marking the fall of Grenada into the hands of the Christians.
The spokesman for the council, Lucio Lopez, said, "Hopefully this will be the first step to cancel the celebrations."
He said the changes stipulated the initial celebrations on the eve of every year as a prelude for the major celebrations the next day.
The celebrations so far involved raising the flag of Castilla on the eve of every year at the gate of the municipality and parade by the military, as a prelude to the major celebrations the next day, to commemorate the victory against the Moslems.
The changes also involved the January 2 celebrations stipulating making them very short with a statement read by the mayor calling for religious and ethnic magnanimity.
