Israel will not oppose US military aid to Syria
Syria-Israel-USA, Politics, 1/6/2000

The Israeli daily Haaretz on Wednesday quoted a source in the Israeli delegation in Shepherdstown, West Virginia as saying that Israel will not oppose the transfer of US military aid to Syria following the signing of a peace agreement between the two countries.

The source added that as soon as the US ensures the qualitative supremacy of the Israeli defense force, Israel will not then oppose US military aid given to Syria.

The source said that before leaving for the US, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak held talks pertaining to the US aid to Syria, and it was agreed that it is in the interest of Israel that the Syrians to embark on developing the US weapons in a way which guarantees a supremacy for the Israeli defense forces.

However, Israeli strategists believe that without the US military aid, Syria will seek to get advanced Russian and European weapons.

The Israeli paper indicated that the formula currently being discussed between Barak's aides is that US weapons sales to the Arab states should be made in coordination with Israel.
