Israel calls for disarming the Hizbullah party
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 1/6/2000

Israeli Deputy Defense Minister Efriam Sneh on Wednesday called on Syria and Lebanon to disarm the Lebanese Hizbullah party of all its weapons within the framework of a peace agreement.

In a statement to the Israeli Army on Wednesday, the Israeli official said Syria has real pressure on Lebanon and the Lebanese government to dismantle the weapons of the Hizbullah Party.

Meanwhile, the Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot said that the Israeli Army's chief of staff, Shaoul Mofaz, also called for separating the Hizbullah Party from its weapons in the course of recommendations proposed by the Israeli Army to the government on the security conditions that should be called for in a peace agreement between Israel and each of Syria and Lebanon.

Moreover, Israeli military men hope to freeze the movement of other elements, especially the Shiite Amal movement and Palestinian organizations working in Lebanon, according to the Israeli paper.

Mofaz stated that the Lebanese government has to start shouldering responsibility for the border strip occupied by Israel in south Lebanon and to call it the "security belt" in order to prevent the Hizbullah Party from attacking Israeli lands from this region after the withdrawal of the Israeli army from it.
