Morocco renews attachment to Sahara settlement plan
Morocco, Politics, 1/5/2000
Morocco on Wednesday renewed backing to the United Nations settlement plan for the Sahara.
Morocco adheres to the U.N. plan and backs the efforts being made by the U.N. secretary-general for the settlement of the issue, Moroccan Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister Mohamed Benaissa said on Wednesday at a meeting with a visiting U.S. Senate delegation.
The U.N. has been trying since the 1980's to hold a self-determination referendum in the Sahara. The vote is destined to determine whether the former Spanish colony, retrieved by Morocco in 1975, sets up on its own or remains part of Morocco.
Mohamed Benaissa also renewed Morocco's attachment to the right of all Sahara-born persons to be identified as would-be voters in the referendum.
The meeting with the U.S. delegation also focused on ways to give a new impetus to the Moroccan-American relations in all fields.
The two sides also reviewed the latest developments in the Middle-East peace process and underlined the pioneer role played Morocco for the settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
