Palestinian opposition in Damascus lives in undeclared tension
Syria-Palestine, Politics, 1/5/2000

The Palestinian opposition in Damascus is in a state of undeclared tension since the announcement of the resumption of negotiations between Syria and Israel.

Leaders of the Palestinian opposition to the Oslo agreement have fears for their future if a peace agreement is signed between Syria and Israel, especially as most of them were expelled from Jordan following "the black September " incidents in 1971 and from Beirut following the Israeli invasion of 1982.

The chairman of the higher follow up committee, Khaled al-Fahoum, said, "A President such as president Hafez al-Assad will not ask the opposition to leave Syria. But this opposition has to abide by current developments in the Syrian arena," adding, "The Palestinian opposition has to be a mere political opposition for which freedom of opinion is ensured."

Observers believe that keeping the Palestinian opposition in the framework of a balanced political media and limiting the struggle to inside Palestine with the closure of all military operations from the outside, especially the front of south Lebanon, in honor of a possible peace agreement between Israel and each of Syria and Lebanon, will represent a complete separation between the Palestinian opposition leadership and their members, taking into consideration that all leaders of the Palestinian opposition are in Syria except the leader of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmad Yassin.
