Report: Lebanon and negotiations on the Syrian track
Lebanon-Regional, Politics, 1/5/2000

The Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am quoted well-informed diplomatic sources in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, as saying that Lebanon is waiting for a Syrian report on the events of the second round of peace talks in Shepherdstown.

The sources stressed that the Syrian negotiator will abstain from discussing the Lebanese file and will not permit the Israelis to debate matters of the sort linked to the military operations in south Lebanon, the fate of the Lebanese resistance or amending the tasks of the monitoring committee of the April Understanding.

The sources indicated that Beirut is closely watching the volume of the US-Syrian coordination towards extending an invitation to Lebanon, especially as the US has realized that Beirut will go to Washington only through coordination with Damascus, a coordination governed with enough progress attained on the Syrian-Israeli track.
