Egypt's population totaled 63,986 million including the Coptic population accounting for 5% to 6% (4.3 million) of the total population of Egypt. Annual population growth was 2.1%, while population increased by about 1.3%annually. As at January 1999, Egypt's labor force rase to 17.860 million (January 1st, 1999). Unemployment was 8.2%. This was said by Ahab Elwi, Chairman of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, to the "Al Musawur" Weekly magazine.
